NEWSLETTER HIGHLIGHT

The December campout is to Brazos Bend State Park near Damon, Texas from Friday December 12th through Sunday, December 14th. Cycling will be the primary activity. Brazos Bend is an excellent place for cycling on-road and off-road trails. You can sign-up to camp for the weekend or just join the Troop for the day on Saturday. Siblings and friends are welcome to join the activities on Saturday. Sign-up for this exciting campout using the sign-up genius on the troop home page at www.bsatroop1424.com.

Scoutmaster Corps Meeting (Dec)
Sunday, Dec 7th from 1:30-2:30pm in the Fellowship Hall at NHLC.
 
FCE / MB Workshops (Dec)
FCE will meet from 2:30-4:30pm in the grassy area near the old trailer shed on the west side of the NHLC campus (weather permitting). Merit badges workshops will be held in the Fellowship Hall and Gym from 2:30 – 4:30pm.
Troop Holiday Party
The Annual Troop Holiday party will be held during the Troop meeting on Tuesday, December 9th. There will be a white elephant gift exchange for the Scouts.
December Campout
Friday, Dec 12 – Sunday Dec 14 at Brazos Bend SP. Main activity will be cycling. With the holidays and camping trips in November and December we only have a few Troop meetings to organize this campout. Therefore a sign-up genius will be used to help the process to sign-up online.
 
PLC / Committee Meeting (Dec)
The Patrol Leadership Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec 16th at 7pm. The next Troop Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec 16th at 7:30pm.
 
Winter Camp
Winter camp will be held at Lost Pines Scout Ranch near Bastrop from Dec 26 – 30th, 2014. Leader for the campout is Ron Hood.
 
Winter NYLT Training
Winter NYLT training class will be held at Bovay Scout Ranch from Dec 26 – 31st, 2014.

January Campout
The January campout is to Goose Island State Park near Rockport on January 9-11, 2014. Campout leaders are Brett Schimanski and John Shoemaker.

Spring Camping Fees Due
Spring camping fees are due on Tuesday, January 13th. Based on 5 campouts planned for the Spring the fees will be $15 x 5 = $75.
 
Pack 1401/1402/1403  Arrow of Light Ceremony
Sienna packs 1401, 1402, and 1403 will hold their Arrow of Light Ceremony for their Webelos II Scouts on Saturday, January 17th. Our Troop will be there to welcome any Scout joining our Troop. Location is the Sienna Amphitheater.
 
New Parent Orientation
New Parent Orientation presentation will be on Sunday, January 25th from 2-4:30pm in the Fellowship Hall at NHLC.
Rank Advancement & Merit Badge Completion Deadline for Court of Honor
Tuesday, January 27th is the deadline to complete all rank advancement and merit badges for the Feb 3rd Court of Honor.

Advancement and Merit Badges
 
Court of Honor
The next Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, Feb 3rd. Elvis Dean will serve as the Mater of Ceremonies. Jason Dean is the ASM advisor for the Court of Honor.
 
Rank Advancement
Remember that all rank advancement work (including completing a successful Board of Review) must be complete by the Tuesday prior to the Court of Honor (COH) in order to receive the advancement at the COH. For the Feb 3rd COH, the deadline will be Tuesday, January 27th. 
 
Merit Badges
All completed merit badge blue cards must be turned in by the Tuesday prior to the COH in order to receive the merit badge at the COH. For the Feb 3rd COH, the deadline will be Tuesday, January 27th.   
 
Camping Fees and Troop Annual Dues Reminder
  
Annual Troop Dues
If you did not pay your Troop Dues Tuesday November 11th they are overdue. Annual dues are $85 per Scout.
 
Spring Camping Fees
Spring Camping fees will be due on the second Tuesday in January of 2015. That will be Tuesday, Jan 13th.
 
Camping
December Campout is to Brazos Bend SP with cycling being the primary activity. Jeff Blanchard is the campout leader.
Winter Camp will be at Lost Pines Scout Reservation near Bastrop from Dec 26 – 30, 2014. Ron Hood is the leader.
January Campout is to Goose Island SP with Brett Schimanski and John Shoemaker the co-leaders.
February Campout is a backpacking trip to Colorado Bend SP. Mike Schultz and Michael Nguyen are the co-leaders.
March Campout is Thunderwolf district Camp-o-ree at Camp Brosig. Mike Schultz is the leader.
April Campout is a canoeing trip to Village Creek SP. A leader is still needed.
May Campout is to Hamilton Pool near Austin and camping at Pedernales Falls SP. A leader is still needed.
Summer Camp location and dates are still being investigated. Robert Steffen is the campout leader.
High Adventure Campout to the The Summit Bechtel Reserve in June of 2015 has been reserved and deposits are due. Program selections are also needed. Mike Schultz is the leader.
 
High Adventure Campout to Philmont Scout Ranch in July of 2016. Online registration has begun. We should receive final notification of our selection in December and at that time we will develop a payment plan for the trip including costs for transportation and meals while in transit.
Fundraising

Kroger Community Rewards program is a benefit to the troop for all families that have tied their Kroger rewards card to the troop account. 1% of the amount spent by each family is donated to the troop. Please register your card with the troop and consider shopping at Kroger to support the troop.

Popcorn sales are completed. The troop sold about $2,500 worth of popcorn putting a significant amount of proceeds into the fundraising accounts for those Scouts that participated.

Service Projects
 
The next Troop Service Project will be the Scouting for Food drive. Dates for distribution of flyers is Saturday, January 24th. Pickup of donated Food will be Saturday, January 31st.

Training

Troop Committee Challenge Training

For registered members of the Troop committee you are required to complete Troop committee challenge to be considered fully trained. There are 7 individuals who are registered as committee members who have not completed the Troop committee challenge training.
Assistant Scoutmaster Training
There are 5 members of the Scoutmaster Corps who have not completed their training. To be fully trained you need to have current Youth Protection Training (YPT), complete Scoutmaster Specific (SMS) class, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) training.
 
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)
IOLS training will be held during Mountain Man rendevous at Camp Mauritz on Jan 2-4, 2015. Thunderwolf district will have their next semi-annual IOLS training session on May 1-3, 2015 and the location is still TBD.
Scoutmaster Specific (SMS)
Thunderwolf district will have their semi-annual SMS training class for the Spring on Saturday, April 11, 2015. Location is still TBD.
 
University of Scouting
University of Scouting is designed to be a day of learning while having fun. Simply stated, it is the finest one-day supplemental training offered in the BSA and intended to give you confidence and skills necessary for an exciting program. This training offers a variety of courses designed to give additional information to help in all areas and programs of the Boy Scouts of America.  Some of the methods touched upon in different basic trainings are treated in greater depth and there are no prerequisites. You can take one, two, or up to 5 classes in one day. There are over 100 training courses available and they cover everything from required training for your position to classes on shooting sports, dutch oven cooking, or even how to make your Troop better! University of Scouting will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2015. Location is still TBD.
National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
NYLT is the second step in the youth training program. It is provided by SHAC and takes place on a campout over 5 days in both the summer and winter. Our Troop had 6 Scouts complete NYLT last summer and have 4 more signed up for the winter session later this year. If you aspire to run for ASPL / SPL then you should sign-up for NYLT at your earliest opportunity. It will provide you with many tools to make your leadership opportunities a success. Minimum requirements for NYLT are to be 14 years of age, First Class Scout, have completed Troop level training (ILST), and be approved by the Scoutmaster. You may attend at 13 with permission from the Scoutmaster. The training dates for 2015 are as follows:
Summer
June 7-12, 2015 at Bovay Scout Ranch.
June 15-20, 2015 at Bovay Scout Ranch
Winter
December 26-31, 2015 at Bovay Scout Ranch
